On this premiere edition of the third season of Native Report, we’ll head to one of the largest lakes in the country for a miraculous story of recovery. See how the commercial fishermen of the Red Lake Nation cooperative gave up their income and way of life in order to save the walleye for future generations. Against all odds, their efforts worked, we’ll tell you how. Then we’ll bring you to the premiere of “Average Family” – the first play by an American Indian playwright at one of the world’s largest children’s theatres. And we’ll attend a growing American Indian Arts and Music festival in northern Minnesota which brings regional attention to Native American culture by featuring artists and musicians of both local and national renown. We’ll also hear from the elders and learn something new this week on Native Report.

On this edition of Native Report we’ll travel to northern Minnesota to learn about the Sandy Lake tragedy of 1850, which left hundreds of Ojibwe dead…and see how their sacrifice is being honored today. We’ll go to a meeting of the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium to see how this groundbreaking group of educators is working to improve the lives of native people all around the world. Then we’ll travel to Waswagoning a re-created traditional Ojibwe village at Lac du Flambeau Wisconsin for lessons in culture and heritage. Hosts Stacey Thunder and Tadd Johnson will give us something new to think about…and we’ll hear from the elders this week on Native Report.

Season 1 Episode 1

On this premiere edition of Native Report host Stacey Thunder takes us to the Independence Day Pow-Wow at Red Lake Nation in northern Minnesota to learn about the long proud history of Red Lake, and how it shapes the community today. Co-Host Tadd Johnson introduces us to a traditional Ojibwe healer and a medical doctor who work cooperatively at the Mille Lacs reservation clinic in central Minnesota. Then Bois Forte elder and traditional healer Gene Goodsky will take us out into the woods with a group of high school students who he is teaching to identify traditional medicines. We’ll also hear from the elders, and take a pop quiz on Native Report.
