DENNIS BANKS LEADS THE LONGEST WALK 5

Iron Horse SingleTAOS, NM: Robby Romero & Robert Mirabal will make a special appearance at a gathering to be held at the Pueblo of Pojoaque for The Longest Walk 5 on April 1, 2016.

“The longest walk will reunite, Were coming together into the light, Emancipation one nation in celebration all our relations” – lyrics from the single Iron Horse by Romero / Mirabal.

Iron Horse Single

Dennis Banks, a co-founder of the American Indian Movement, will be leading The Longest Walk 5 beginning February 13 at La Jolla Shores in San Diego, California. Banks has declared this walk to be a war on drugs. The first Longest Walk was organized in 1978 to bring attention to 11 bills pending in the U.S. Congress. The Native Americans Equal Opportunity Act would have eliminated all treaties between the U.S. government and tribal nations. This bill did not pass largely due to the attention brought by the walk from California to Washington D.C.

Taos News: How would have Dennis Hopper celebrated his 79th birthday? It’s difficult to tell but most likely an Easy Rider Ride would have appealed to him. Over 150 riders and a large crowd of fans participated in the second annual Dennis Hopper Day…

“We wanted to commemorate Dennis and his many contributions to Taos,” said Robby Romero. “We had a beautiful day with plenty of sunshine, which made for a wonderful ride. I believe that the spirit of Dennis Hopper was with us and having a great time. ”

2015 Academy Award Winner Patricia Arquette was among the events special guests. “I got to make two movies with Dennis,” she said. “He made the first truly independent film that was very successful, “Easy Rider” which changed the possibilities for independent cinema. He was an incredible person and I am happy to be here to honor him, in this town, his home, a place that he loved so much.”

The first thing on actor and blues musician Gary Farmer’s mind was getting a drink of water. Farmer and dozens of motorcyclists had just arrived in Ranchos De Taos from a rally in Santa Fe where the first event in Sunday’s (May 17) “Easy Rider Ride” took place.

A screening of “Easy Rider” and costume contest took place at Old Martina’s Hall as part of the commemoration celebration, which also featured music by Robby Romero and Robert Mirabal of Iron Horse. “At any given moment our iconic historical figures are present with us, from Mable Dodge Lujan to Dennis Hopper,” said Mirabal. “It’s good to celebrate the blessings they bestowed on us. They represent the intensity of the Wild West and the freedom of who we are.”
