A Grandma On The Right Side Of History

Jane Fonda and NCS Youth Ambassador Ta’Kaiya Blaney at the Green Peace Toast the Coast event at Jericho Beach

Looking trim as ever in her Greenpeace t-shirt, ‘Toast the Coast Before the Coast is Toast,’ and a straw cowboy hat, the 77-year-old grandmother launched into her talk with great passion acknowledging that she was on un-ceded Coast Salish Territory.

Fonda said, “The West Coast has been a near-mythical place since the onset of the environmental movement. So I was very surprised to hear about the threats of tankers and pipelines. I’m here today because I believe at this moment – that we are standing at an existential crossroads: the issue has become extremely simple: it’s people versus oil. Life versus oil…”

She also joined the audience to watch the many acts and speakers including 14-year-old indigenous peace activist singer/songwriter Ta’kaiya Blaney, who has been impressing people since she was nine.

The Taos News May 21, 2015 – Second annual Dennis Hopper Day celebration rolls out in style.

How would have Dennis Hopper celebrated his 79th birthday? It’s difficult to tell but most likely an “Easy Rider Ride” would have appealed to him.

Over 150 riders and a large crowd of fans participated in the second annual Dennis Hopper Day, on Sunday (May 17), presented and organized by Robby Romero’s Eagle Thunder Entertainment.

At 1 p.m., when many riders who had started their journey at Santa Fe-Harley Davidson were still on their way, others had already congregated outside Old Martina’s Hall in Ranchos de Taos to receive their complimentary “Dennis Hopper Day Easy Rider Ride” patches, which were available for all registered riders.

THE MUD PALACE

Robby RomeroTAOS, NM – Robby Romero’s teens began a year early on his twelfth birthday here in Taos at the Mabel Dodge Lujan House. Dennis Hopper owned the house at the time and during his long residency there, his Mud Palace was the talk of the town. The stories still circulate all these years later.

I could never understand why others assumed the Mud Palace was some kinda crazed and dysfunctional scene… For me it was a place to escape all that.”  – Robby Romero

ROBBY ROMERO’S MUSICAL ROOTS

Photo: Martin Of Hollywood

TAOS, NM – Robby Romero’s musical roots run deep. He was born with them. You couldn’t make up this story, a life so charmed and filled with a cast of characters most only get to dream about…

I was cast in a passion play, a crazed symphony of poets and players who would later play an important role in the music i was destined to create.” – Robby Romero

His inherited talent goes back to his grandfather, a gifted musician and singer. Both of his parents were musically inclined and left the Apache and Pueblo Territories of New Mexico as soon as they finished High School and were married. They had their sights set on Hollywood. His mother Rita Rogers danced her way into Show Business, appearing in over a dozen Elvis Presley Motion Pictures when Robby was still a child.

ROBERT MIRABAL, ROBBY ROMERO AT THE TCA IN TAOS

Iron Horse Live TAOS, NM – Robert Mirabal’s annual Christmas Concert at the TCA is a Taos tradition. For over a decade, Robert has gifted home grown fans and friends with an evening of story telling, music and dance.

Last week, although the premise was no different – intimate and relaxed – Robby Romero joined him onstage on guitar for the entire show.

Although Robby mainly held down the groove on rhythm, he did give us a taste of his great lead licks and for the most part many of the songs they played and sang together on, were Romero compositions or new collaborations by Iron Horse, their band.

DENNIS HOPPER DAY DESCENDS ON TAOS, N.M.

NEW YORK, NY – One of the few people who spent their formative years in the 1970s at the Taos Mabel Dodge Luhan house, or “Mud Palace,” the 22-room adobe structure my father bought in the Taos Pueblo, was Robby Romero. My father took him under his wing and encouraged him to become the rock musician and recording artist he is today, as the leader of Red Thunder, the band he formed in 1989.

Robby Romero has been working for a long time to break down cultural barriers within the Taos community to bring people together. He and my father, who also wanted to bring people together, were very likeminded.” – Marin Hopper

On May 17, 2014, Robby launched the first annual Dennis Hopper Motorcycle Ride. The event saw a bevy of bikers, hosted by the Taos Pueblo and escorted by Gary Lefthand, the chief of police, ride along the places where “Easy Rider” was filmed, including the Pueblo itself.

TAOS, NM NATIVES MIRABAL & ROMERO COLLABRATE TO RELEASE ‘IRON HORSE’

MICHIGAN – Taos natives and Native Rock recording artists Robby Romero and Robert Mirabal have combined their talents to release a new “alter-Native” single titled, “Iron Horse.” “Iron Horse” commemorates the Summer of the Red Willow, when Taos, New Mexico’s Kit Carson Park was renamed “Red Willow” in June 2014 by the Town of Taos.

Iron Horse” is a unique reflection of the many genres of music that thrive in Northern New Mexico – from the traditional Native American flute and soul stirring vocals, to classic rock and Spanish guitar. The fast paced, almost spiritual anthem of the Native American people’s diversity and their potential as a force of nature when they are united is inspirational.
